Rival island clans have kept the peace for years through an annual bride offering made by the weaker clan, but the son of that clan’s chief is tired of this archaic system and intends to shake things up. A year has passed since Avel, the son of the Tangata clan’s chief, married into the Miyaru clan, whose people are said to possess the blood of sharks.
